The challenge we encountered using route 864 was gravel. There were only a few parts that had me slowing down significantly and that was probably due to rain washing the road away since it was ruts. There is lots to see around Lake Myvatn but do not let Dettifoss fall off your itineray for it was the highlight of the northern part of our Icelandic adventure. I cannot comment on 862 except that I drove PAST it as it definitely didn't look fun and reminded me of someone's driveway. Take the fantastic roads running around Jokulsargljufur national park - the aforementioned 864 and 862. It was an unpleasant drive to say the least with people passing me or flying down at who-knows-what-speed the other way. Th e East side of the waterfall can also be reached via Road 864, but the roads are less safe and part of the route is a simple dirt track, which is potentially hazardous during the winter. Road 862 from Rt. Luckily, Dettifoss was right in the middle and broke the journey in half and I got to stop. Once you have explored the various vantage points from which to enjoy Dettifoss, it is also worth the 20 minute trek upstream to see Selfoss (the terrain is quite easy to walk). 862 is paved and good all the way to the parking lot of Dettifoss. It was worth every moment to have this experience. If you take your time, 864 is not bad and was a great view of the falls! Getting to Dettifoss requires a choice. The 60km took almost 2 hours since I was generally driving around 30-40kmph. Take in the fantastic moon scape scenery, the as ergo cliffs, the views across to Krafla and numerous other volcanos. While you are there take the short walk to Selfoss, not as powerful but perhaps more beautiful, and very few people seem to bother to take the ten minute walk.
