‘Papicha’ is a progressive film directed by Mounia Meddour, produced by Xavier Gens and Gregoire Gensollen from The Ink Connection, and Patrick Andre from High Sea Productions, and distributed worldwide by Jour2Fête; it premiered in Cannes earlier this year and has been selected to represent Algeria for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars. Xavier Gens was born on April 27, 1975 in Dunkerque, Nord, France. Nedjma's insane resilience and commitment to her beliefs and obsessive compulsion to create were fascinating to watch. Seems to almost resist the urge to fully pivoting to a more traditionally pamphletary kind of picture, with its protagonists brimming with life and establishing their genuinely caring connections with one another, but the fact that their context simply won't allow that is of course the whole point. Too tonally polarized to fully sink in for me; a movie featuring fashion shows and massacres in equal measure is hard to get a handle on even if the fashion shows are in Terrific Algerian drama about a bunch of girls in University as the country gets increasingly hard-line Islamic fundamentalist around them.
